What is Copyright?
Copyright is the exclusive legal right, given to the author of an orignal work to print, publish, perform, film, or record any literary, artistic, or musical material, and to authorize others to do the same. Copright is a form of intellectual property that allows the creator of orignal work exclusivity in determining whether and under what circumstances the work may be copied and used by others. Copyright covers both published and unpublished works. Original works covered by copyright laws include literature, drama, music, and art. Poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture fall under these categories.
What is Plagiarism?
Plagiarism is the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own. Plagiarism is the stealing and publication of another person's thoughts or ideas and then representing them as one's own original work. Plagiarism can constitute copyright infringement. It is a serious ethical offense in academia and in the workplace.
What is Fair Use?
In U.S. copyright law, Fair Use is the doctrine that brief excerpts of copyright material may be quoted verbatim for purposes such as criticism, news reporting, teaching, and research, without the need for permission from or payment to the copyright holder.
